The Rise of Rooftop Solar in
India and the Progress of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli
Yojana
In recent years, India’s renewable energy landscape has been undergoing a profound transformation. Among the most impactful initiatives driving this shift is the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a bold, future-forward mission launched to revolutionize rooftop solar adoption across Indian households.
The Evolution of Solar Energy in India
India's solar journey began
earnestly in the early 2010s, picking up speed with the announcement of the National Solar
Mission in 2010. Today, India stands as one of the global leaders in
solar energy deployment.
As of 31 May 2024, India’s total installed solar power capacity stands at:
- 110.83 GW - making solar energy the single largest source among renewable energy types in the country.
This progress isn't just about numbers, it reflects a strategic national commitment to reduce carbon emissions, increase energy independence, and uplift households through clean energy solutions.
Rooftop Solar: The Power of
Decentralized Energy

Among various solar formats, rooftop solar offers a unique benefit, it allows individual households to become power producers. This decentralized approach not only helps reduce pressure on the grid but also empowers citizens, especially in urban and semi-urban areas, to take charge of their energy usage.
Recognizing this immense potential, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was introduced.
Scheme Launch and Vision
Announced in the Union Budget 2024–25, the PM Surya Ghar scheme was officially launched on 15 February 2024 through the National Portal for Rooftop Solar - Ministry of New and Renewable Energy
Its core mission is to:
- Enable 1 crore (10 million) households to install rooftop solar systems
- Provide 300 units of free electricity per month to each beneficiary
This is not merely a subsidy scheme, it is a movement toward achieving Net-Zero carbon emissions through accessible, affordable, and clean energy at the household level.
Financial Outlay and Support
To achieve this bold target, the government has allocated a substantial investment of Rs. 75,021 crore.
The financial support is structured to meet different energy consumption levels:
|
Monthly Consumption |
Recommended Rooftop Capacity |
Subsidy Amount |
|
0–150 units |
1–2 kW |
₹30,000 – ₹60,000 |
|
150–300 units |
2–3 kW |
₹60,000 – ₹78,000 |
|
Above 300 units |
>3 kW |
₹78,000 |
Additionally, concessional loans are available, making it easier for
households to manage upfront costs.
Eligibility and Seamless Process
Eligibility criteria include:
- Indian citizenship
- Legal ownership of a house
- Sufficient rooftop space
- No prior receipt of solar subsidies
Once approved, authorized vendors handle the installation. The subsidy is then credited directly to the user’s bank account within 30 days post-installation.
How the Portal Works
The dedicated national portal offers end-to-end user functionality:
- Consumer registration
- Mobile number OTP verification
- Vendor selection
- Project tracking
This streamlined digital process ensures transparency, accountability, and ease of access across urban and rural regions. What the Numbers Tell Us

Governance and Oversight
Recently, the Parliamentary Estimates Committee visited agrivoltaic sites in Delhi to review the progress of both the PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM schemes. This indicates not only active implementation but also a strong governance mechanism ensuring its continued momentum.
Solar and the Net-Zero Commitment
India has pledged to achieve Net-Zero emissions by 2070, and solar power, particularly distributed rooftop systems is a cornerstone in reaching that goal. The PM Surya Ghar scheme brings the power of clean energy directly to the people, cutting electricity bills, reducing grid demand, and lowering carbon footprints.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is more than a government scheme. It is a people-centric revolution. With robust financial backing, digital infrastructure, and clear-cut benefits, this initiative is paving the way for a solar-powered India.
